p The Dargaville ASB partnered with St John Ambulance in fundraising to install Electronic Patient Report Forms into local ambulances. “It is thanks to the ASB staff and the community that we have achieved our goal. A recent donation from the CMA building trust has meant we have reached our target of $40,000 and the EPRFs are now installed. This means officers can send information directly to the medical teams that will care for the patient. This reduces time factors and limits paperwork. We are very grateful for the support,” said secretary/treasurer of St John Ambulance Northern Wairoa area committee, Elaine McCracken.

Keeping families together Theatre actor remembered u by Ayla Miller

Known for his warmth, humility, integrity, humour and acting skills, Harry Colin Phillips died on April 22 at his home in England and a tribute will be held at the Otamatea Repertory Theatre in memory of him.

On June 10, families, businesses and volunteers will hit the streets both nationally and in the Kaipara to fundraise for Ronald McDonald House charity. These funds go towards helping Ronald McDonald Houses, which are located in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, to provide a home away from home for families of critically ill children near the hospital, along with other facilities and resources. Ruawai parents Eloise and Adam Barlow experienced first-hand how essential this service is when their youngest boy Elijah was born. “He needed immediate care in the neonatal intensive-care unit and was flown straight down. We spent almost six weeks together at Ronald McDonald House while he received the medical care he needed. We also returned to the house for another week shortly before his first birthday so he could undergo surgery. Our baby passed away unexpectedly at 15 months. “Ronald McDonald House was the glue that held us together during the most difficult and challenging time of our lives. The kindness, smiles, hugs, hot meals, chats, support and love we received from fellow struggling parents/ families and volunteer support staff was something that we will treasure forever. The annual street appeal is our way of saying thank you and giving back to

There will be a stall outside their Dargaville branch from 10.30am selling second hand books, soup and fry bread. Last year they raised almost $1,000 and this year they hope to top that. Local ASB branches are accepting donations and look out for street collectors wearing blue bibs on Friday, June 10. ¢

New future for old building u by Ann Morgan

The 65-year-old Te Kopuru bowling clubrooms have taken on a new lease of life at the NorthTec complex in Dargaville where the historic building will become home to an Early Childhood Centre. In a major operation that was two months in the planning, the move from Te Kopuru was carried out in a combined effort between NorthTec and Highway House Movers. “Due to its size, we didn’t want to cut it in two because of its historic nature. We braced it inside and out to stabilise and secure it,” said Highway’s managing director Mick Daly. “At each bridge we had to stop and hydraulically lift the trailer up over the bridge. We had two pilot vehicles at the front and back of the moving truck. This type of project takes precision, concentration and focus.” Dene Holyoake from NorthTec Dargaville said the object was to utilise the building and create something good for the town p Te Kopuru residents Skye and Colin Walding with NorthTec student Lee Tamihere watch the bowling club leave its such as a daycare centre. original home “We have space on our property and it is a good location. Maintenance on service lines is critical for your safety It is extremely important that our consumers are aware of their obligations around the upkeep of service lines – those are the lines taking the power into your house, woolshed, cowshed or farm shed. Over time, these service lines degrade – just like power poles do. And like service lines, it is the responsibility of the landowner to cover the cost of replacing powerpoles on your land servicing your main power source - when they get to the end of their lifespan. So take the time to look at your service line and power pole (if there is one on your land) and if you think either of them is looking a little worn out, please call us to do an inspection. It is really important your service lines are in good and safe order as people have been known to be electrocuted by service lines.

Dinner and discussion u by Ayla Miller

Mangawhai Business Development Association has invited Northland MP Winston Peters to speak at the Mangawhai Golf Club in a move to open up communication between residents, business owners and those in influential positions. Mr Peters will speak for an hour briefly covering the driving forces behind Northland’s economic growth and what that could mean for small communities such as Mangawhai. This will be followed by other topics of importance with time for questions afterwards. Chair Richard Gunson says the evening is about keeping the business and the wider community up to date with what is happening in the political sphere. “Hopefully a number of people will ask questions about the economic growth of the region and about the general politics that affect our day to day lives especially in the business community. “People need to take advantage of this opportunity because it doesn’t happen very often in places like Mangawhai and we hope to fix that. “Our MP’s and others that serve us are only human after all. Events like this means they can meet and speak with people. Mr Peters has always been a topical MP. He’s an

The power of horse riding u by Rose Stirling

Saddling up is helping three young battlers from Te Kopuru Primary school to reach their full potential.

p Coleman on Pudy, Anthony on Cherokee and Wairama on Soloman

Wairama who is eight, Anthony nine, and Coleman ten, attend Whangarei Riding for the Disabled once every week for lessons in therapeutic riding and horsemanship skills. Their RDA coach, Heather Timmins says: “riding for people with disabilities can help them with motor skills, core strength and general muscle tone. It also helps with cognitive ability and we can focus on things like social skills and communication. “Coleman is rewarding to teach and he is totally in love with his horse and he gets a lot of joy out of riding. It’s hard getting him off his horse. “Anthony was extremely nervous when he first came here and now he won’t stop talking about his horse and he just really enjoys horse riding.

He has great listening skills and follows instructions well and he’s always got a smile on his face. “Wairama is quite independent — he’s learning how to ride his horse and develop basic riding skills. He participates in group activities really well and he shows a real interest in it and always tries really hard to please.” Ms Timmins says she loves teaching the boys because of the benefits it brings them. “I like seeing the kids get enjoyment and experience the benefits of horse riding. “You see quite a lot of relationships built and when they leave they have this real passion for the horse. We’ve had kids be told they could never walk and now they can walk with frames.” ¢

We attended the 2016 DWN Conference which was held at Claudelands, Waikato with over 300 other dairying women. This conference hit the mark as usual with comments like the following: “I have been dairy farming for 21 years, and in all that time I have never been to any dairy farming event where I have felt like I belonged-until I went to my first DWN conference this year. To be somewhere with so many other people who understand the trials and tribulations of raising a family and working on a dairy farm was so inspiring. The workshops were relevant for anyone at any stage of their career, and the whole event was so well organised. 2 days jam packed with information, inspiration and motivation! I will definitely be going again next year”. It’s about being courageous, more confident, celebrating who we are, have fun, support each other, team work, We are Valuable!

Action planned on problem intersection

ADVERTORIAL

Winter Flea Control

u by Rose Stirling

To reduce the number and severity of crashes at the intersection of Hokianga Road and State Highway 12 the NZTA is looking at installing a ‘fried egg’ roundabout. • Only 5% of the flea population are adult fleas, the rest are larvae, pupae and eggs • This means it can take three months to get a flea problem under control • As fleas will not die until the temperature is below 8oC the flea lifecycle continues year round in

Northland — this means that you need to treat for fleas all year round • A female flea can lay 2,000 flea eggs in her lifetime and can start reproducing within 40 minutes of hatching • Fleas as well as causing severe itching can spread tapeworm and cause anaemia

WARRANT YOUR HOME

Play it safe with electricity u by Andy Bryenton

Local electricians Paul and John from Dargaville Laser Electrical have seen all kinds of strange — and sometimes dangerous — electrical do-it-yourself work during their years on the job. Some have been risible — but many have been a disaster waiting to happen. Paul puts it best — it’s simply a smart move to call a real, qualified electrician when it’s time to install items like extractors, lighting, power sockets and appliances. The current state of the law means that to do otherwise invites big problems when it’s time to sell property, or, indeed, if the worst happens and an insurance claim has to be made. Work without the sign-off of a qualified pro doesn’t make the grade, and could land intrepid do-it-yourselfers in hot water. It’s also a good idea to check the quality of appliances plugged into your home’s electrical supply. John points out a little known fact, not widely comprehended by the buying public, but one which has large implications for both buying new items, and especially buying online. Take a look at most reputable brands of electrical device, and you’ll see a sticker carrying information, including the sign of a triangle enclosing a ticked circle. This C-tick is proof that the device is safe to use — but many appliances don’t have it. A loophole in the rules allows nonticked appliances to be sold, with many

changing hands online. But if disaster strikes — and even if the non-ticked item was not to blame — insurance companies could invalidate a claim, citing the very fact that an ‘unsound’ device was plugged in. It’s worth checking, because even large department stores can carry non C-tick compliant appliances in stock. As Winter bites, p Modern appliances should carry the ‘C-tick’ mark — with chills and damp, and be installed and repaired by professionals to save insurance headaches your home’s electrical ‘grid’ takes the strain. Make sure it’s safe and compliant to enjoy a worry-free season of warmth and comfort. ¢ WINTER IS HERE!

Dining & ENTERTAINMENT Warming up your winter u by Andy Bryenton

As the cold weather arrives for Winter, it’s a great time to visit those establishments around the Kaipara who offer a roaring fireplace, a hearty menu of seasonal favourites, or some spicy dishes to banish the chill. Then again, one could take a cue from Kaiwaka’s Three Furlongs tavern, where they’ve found a new way to break the ice for the season. The popular bar and hotel’s event manager, Kyle Underwood, is no stranger to hosting themed parties which get the town talking. Now he’s set to reprise the very successful concept which impressed the ladies of the East Kaipara at its inception in Maungaturoto — a night of glamorous fun that’s definitely just for the girls. Ladies night comes back with cocktails, prizes, music, and of course the obligatory shirtless male waiters tending to the snacks and canapes. There’s even a pick-up service available in a luxury stretch limousine, to add a little more high-rolling style to your evening. Previous ladies nights have been sellout events, with good times had by all — and this one will be no exception if the already voluble social media buzz is any indication. Live rock covers band 5K will perform late into the night on the 25th to finish off an evening of slightly more sophisticated merriment than most! Speaking of being merry, it’s also the season for mid-winter Christmas — the cold climate of June is perfect for all that traditional northern festive fare. Drop in to the Aratapu Tavern for a

Finally, it’s worth mentioning an event which is coming up at the end of the month — the return of the King. No, not the Peter Jackson remake of Tolkien’s epic fantasy novel — the imminent arrival of the ‘King of Rock

and Roll’. Rumours of his survival have persisted for years, and now there’s a hint he’s going to surface in Dargaville. Watch this space! ¢

AUTO

In the running for the top spot u by Andy Bryenton

With three utes, the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi Triton topping early 2016 sales charts — a long way ahead of top small car, the Suzuki Swift — it’s no surprise that Toyota are looking to broaden the field among their light commercial offerings. The dominant Ranger has been a fairly balanced contender with the SR5 Hilux in 4x4 form. But the rear-wheel drive Ford cleaned up in previous engagements, prompting Toyota bosses to formulate a new model — the PreRunner. The push for more utes on the road — and on farms — is being felt locally as engineering firm Baty Thomas have found. Their service, custom building tough steel ute decks, has been in strong demand and a visit to their factory reveals a selection of decks ready to be finished and fitted. The release of the new Toyota is likely to boost orders, but engineering boss Brian, is seeing plenty of Tritons, BT50s and Navaras too. Toyota’s PreRunner hearkens back to the no-nonsense toughness of previous Hilux editions, paring back the ute formula for those who want ride height, load capacity and the reliability of a

Toyota 2.8-litre turbo diesel — but who could care less about four wheel drive. Needless to say, this removes quite a mass of iron from the underbelly of the beast, with the predictable side-effect of improved handling. While the rear end still packs the same tough leaf springs associated with serious work, the lighter front means better manners on tarmac. It’s also dramatically affected the price. A new PreRunner weighs in at just over $40k, meaning that many a prospective buyer will be seriously weighing up the need for all-wheel traction. It might mean a small drop in towing capacity. It might mean that your brand new ute can’t scale the toughest terrain. But if you’re really, truly going to do all that and more — be honest — you could spend the more than 10,000 dollars sliced off the Toyota’s sticker and buy a second hand Prado. ¢

Expansion plans come to fruition u by Andy Bryenton

It’s quite usual to hear of a large, multinational corporation opening a new branch office in a small New Zealand town, bringing a successful formula but ultimately sending profits back to either Auckland or, more predictably, overseas. Thankfully local Northland business Gas and Tyre have been doing things a bit out of the ordinary since their inception in Dargaville, and that’s part of the reason they are now embarking on a new chapter of growth — in central Whangarei. It’s been a meteoric rise for the team behind the big orange and black buildings, now situated in Waipapa, Kaitaia, Ruakaka, Whangarei and Dargaville. From a small operation in a humble shed, hard work has paid off, leading to alliances with major

international brands such as Nokian and Mickey Thompson. With customers as varied as forestry operators, rural contractors, road freight fleets and ordinary families, the ‘secret’ to that rapid growth has been clear. It’s also been no real secret at all. Fair prices, good advice, and a willingness to go ‘above and beyond’ have all played their part. That’s not just good business rhetoric either, for some of the fleet service drivers and technicians who wear the Gas and Tyres colours, going above and

p Open for business — Gas and Tyre’s new building is hard to miss, situated in the industrial heart of Whangarei

beyond might mean heading out in the darkness of a cold morning to get a big rig rolling. It could equally mean getting a tractor back into the field during timecritical planting or reaping, or heading out into the forest to fix up a skidder that’s stopped a multi-million dollar forestry operation in its tracks. The hard work recently has been of a different nature, of course — constructing a whole new base of operations to tackle a slightly different market. The Whangarei store may be a new kind of location — perhaps a bit more urban than the other Gas and Tyre satellites. But the same kind of attitude which can see a technician happily seeing a contractor on his way before dawn is what’s built it. The new branch, situated right next to the new Whangarei harbour bridge, is likely to see many more passenger vehicles — as well as a fair few heavy trucks from the industrial edge of Northland’s biggest conurbation. In short then, this is the very opposite of the town coming to the country. It’s a case of knowledge learned in the field, and a winning work ethic, coming from our small Northland towns to the city. ¢

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitat debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take

Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring

microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Prevent septic system problems – treat with Septi-Cure™.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure works, keeping their tank in very good condition. * Results May Vary Before*

Account Managers Wanted p Mitesh Lal, fire chief Jeff Palmer and Sanjay Kumar inspect the donated heat pump

Amitesh Lal and Sanjay Kumar of Supercool Refrigeration donated the air conditioning heat pump in conjunction with Four Square. Mr Lal says they have always supported the brigade. “Most of them are volunteers and there was a need for it as they are available 24/7 so we have to look after them.” “It’s really about us wanting to support the community.” Dargaville fire station

chief, Jeff Palmer, says everyone at the station is over the moon. “It’s the first time ever that we’ve had a heat pump, it’ll keep us warm in winter and keep us cool in summer, so it will just create a nice environment, a better place to work in.” Mr Palmer says he is thankful for the donation and for the support of both Supercool and the Four Square. “They’ve been generous towards us over many many years now.”
